Understanding Your Skin

Your Skin

Our skin is our body’s largest organ and is the home of a diverse and complex ecosystem. The diversity of this ecosystem varies from individual to individual and has been shown to have a direct impact on our overall immunity.

Many skin conditions occur as a direct result of changes and/or pathogenesis of the diverse bacterial communities of the skin. And failure to either control or tolerate the present bacteria and/or pathogens can result in skin issues.

Recent research in this area over the last decade has finally allowed us to have a glimpse into the life of our skin. The research has shed light onto the intricate connection between overall host immune function and the state of the microbial communities on the skin.

The issue is that this relationship is bi-directional (state of the skin impacts the immune system and vice versa) and extremely complex. And this complexity has made it difficult for the medical community to fully understand it. Nonetheless, having a general understanding of what research has uncovered so far can help us better evaluate our own skin issues.

This chapter examines the skin in significant detail and includes topics such as:

  • Basics of the skin and the role is plays
  • The structure of the skin
  • Areas where potential skin issues can arise
  • What is the skin microbiome
  • The connection between our skin and our overall health.

Chapter Outline

The content of this chapter is broken down into the following main sections:

  1. The Important Role Our Skin Plays
Why your skin is so important to your health and it’s various functions
  2. The Structure of the Skin
How the skin is structured and how it develops
  3. Skin Microbiome
What role the skin’s microbial environment plays and why it matters
    • Variation in the Microbiome
    • Factors Influencing the Microbiome
    • Relation to Immunity
    • Dysbiosis in the Microbiome

It is recommended you read this chapter in order (this whole book for that matter). Jumping around may place some information out of context.
